May 2011 Best and Worst Covers

When it came to this month's glossies, there was nothing more refreshing than seeing supermodel Cindy Crawford looking stunningly gorgeous and fit on the cover of both Elle China and Vogue Mexico. Elle's U.S. counterpart didn't disappoint either this month with Gwen Stefani showing off a platinum, slicked-back hairdo while posing in a one-sleeve Pre-Fall 2011 Givenchy look. Unfortunately, Vogue's U.S. edition didn't fare quite as well, putting an awkwardly sultry-looking Reese Witherspoon, once again, on the cover of their magazine this month. One thing's for sure, bombshell blond was definitely popular this month as it was also the choice for pixie haired Michelle Williams' Interview cover. At least for her part, Williams looked sultry, and there was nothing awkward about it, as she posed for her close-up shot in a Celine sweater. As for Lady Gaga, fresh off her Vogue cover, the singer appeared on the Harper's Bazaar May 2011 cover in this month's other popular hair color, strawberry blonde, with her infamous cheekbones which she insists are her bones and not prosthetics. While I could do without the somewhat disturbing cheekbones, kudos to Harper's Bazaar for delivering an interesting cover in an overly-Gaga saturated market. Do a 180 and you'll get InStyle's May 2011 cover featuring a fresh-faced Kate Hudson. It's hard not to find appeal in Hudson and her smile is a perfect fit for a spring cover. The Biggest Loser's Jillian Michaels covers this month's Shape and it's a pity that they Photoshopped her bikini-clad body as it looks much better untouched on the show. What they should have opted to Photoshop was her somewhat smug expression — truly a pity as Michaels comes off as a passionate individual in on-camera interviews. For a look at a bikini done right, check-out the May 2011 issue of Self which featured a glowing Gwyneth Paltrow. From bikini to bathing suit, January Jones looks smashing in a strapless look on the cover of W. The actress also appeared on the cover of Marie Claire's UK edition in a cut-out Gucci dress similar to the Topshop Unique one Ginnifer Goodwin opted for at this year's Met Gala. The month's biggest disappointment, however, came courtesy of Allure for the sheer fact that they opted to put Lauren Conrad on the cover without giving much of a convincing justification as to why she is still relevant in her post-The Hills career. Are we truly to believe she's morphed into a beauty maven?

Timeless Fashion

Ali MacGraw's life is the stuff dreams are made of. After landing an assistant job in 1960 at Harper's Bazaar in New York, the magazine's editor, Diane Vreeland, put her on the cover, leading to a brief career as a model. Ten years later she was cast in Love Story, which made her an overnight star. Still referred to today by stylists such as Rachel Zoe, her look in the film came to define preppy chic, and she became celebrated as a style icon on the cover of Time magazine; her ever-present hat even became known as the ‘Ali cap'. Later on, married to producer Robert Evans, the clothes became more bohemian - as did the headwear. In 1972 she co-starred with Steve McQueen - then the biggest actor in Hollywood - in The Getaway. They became lovers - and the world's sexiest couple. She now resides in New Mexico producing yoga videos!

I am obsessing over this mother and daughter couplet! Kate Moss is such a gorgeous former model. Her style is always rockin from the casual to the formal. She is a style inspiration to anyone and everyone. From the fur coats to the skinnies and blazers, she really knows how to put together an on the go outfit!

Mother's day fashion

Now here are 10 classic pieces for you to buy for yourself on mother’s day: 

• Nice pair of jeans: not anyone can sport that low waist pair of jeans, not even teenagers so to play it safe go for boot cut jeans with a medium high rise. Darker colors are more slimming, and avoid washed out pairs.

• The sleek blazer: a well-cut, form fitting blazer is sometimes all you need to go out. Whether patterned or plain, it looks good on almost everything (from jeans to skirts). Just steer clear of the padded blazers out there; we’re not trying to impersonate Rihanna.

• Cashmere sweater: whether it’s a wrap style, or just a gorgeous turtleneck sweater, cashmere gives your look that luxurious edge. Remember, fitted styles are preferable especially when accessorized with stone jewelry.

•  Crisp white shirt: that goes without saying. A crisp white shirt with ruffles will do wonders. The white shirt should be the second item you splurge on (after the jeans of course) since you’ll be wearing it with almost anything. Add a chunky necklace and you're already looking fabulous!

• Black trousers: When we say black, we don’t mean leather. No one should be allowed to wear leather not even Britney Spears. Older women tend to fall for creased pants, which is also a no-no! Go for a plain, high quality, flare (but not too wide at the bottom) pair.

• Flowy chiffon blouse: Great for occasion! Sheer always adds this feminine, flirty touch to any outfit. 

• Your winter coat: If you’re a bit short, avoid knee-length coats. Something in a bright color, or good fabric, or even sassy buttons would spice up your wardrobe.

• The skirt: A nice knee-length pencil skirt, or a maxi, form fitting one would both look good on you, give it a try.

• The cardigan: the best cover up ever invented. Any color, length, fabric, or style will re-invent your whole wardrobe. My all time favorite!

• The scarf: is the number 1 neck flattering accessory. Go crazy with pattern and colors!
